Sky Sports Pundit Paul Merson could not believe that Alexis Sanchez hasn’t scored for almost six months and claimed that Manchester United’s playing style is not suiting the Chilean.

The forward joined the club in January and has failed to deliver the goods. Merson was quoted on Sky Sports – The Debate saying:

“He looks a bit lost at the moment but that could be confidence.

“I can’t believe it’s nearly six months without a goal.”

The Arsenal legend believes that the playing system at Emirates suited Sanchez’s style of play. However, at United, the conservative football system isn’t doc-tailing with what the Chilean prefers.

“At United, there’s a structure and they say let’s not get beat first and them go from there. That’s why I think he’s finding it difficult. At Arsenal it was free-flowing but it wasn’t successful, they didn’t win anything.”

Merson pointed out that Jose Mourinho wants players to track back and defend, which is quite contrasting to the way Arsene Wenger worked with Sanchez.

The Sky Sports pundit questioned our decision to buy such a quality player and not make proper use of him.

“It is a problem giving him big wages. I don’t know if Man Utd wanted him. I think it was a case of there’s nobody else around so we’ll take him so Man City can’t have him and it’s backfired in a way.”

Sanchez is yet to find the back of the net this season and hasn’t looked anything like the player he was at Arsenal.

Mourinho has a tough task with regards to getting the best out of the 29-year-old. The former Arsenal man has the qualities of a world-class player but it is frustrating that we aren’t able to see his best at Old Trafford.
