“Normally that result would never happen” – Mourinho receives backing from former Premier League manager over 3-0 Spurs loss

Sam Allardyce has come out in Jose Mourinho‘s defence and claimed that the manager is not to blame for Manchester United‘s 3-0 loss against Tottenham.

A brace from Lucas Moura and a Harry Kane goal condemned us to our second defeat from three Premier League games, despite the team having a number of quality chances in the match.

All the goals came in the second half and Allardyce brought out a few stats to back the claim that we were good.

The former Everton and Bolton manager was quoted by the Mirror when speaking at the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT:

“United had 57 per cent possession, 23 shots at goal and five on target. Tottenham had 43 per cent possession, nine shots on goals and five on target.

“It’s only about Tottenham’s finishing that got them the victory – normally that result would never happen.

“So is it a freak result? When you’ve had 23 shots at your own place and you have not scored, that is not the manager’s fault. But the manager always gets blamed at the end of the day.”

Allardyce added that Mourinho had set the team to attack and we should have won the game easily. However, poor defending and not taking our chances cost in the end.

The former England manager also believed we would win more games if we kept playing in the same manner, as long as we limited the mistakes on the pitch.

The loss has placed us six points behind the early pace setters in the Premier League and our next clash against Burnley will be crucial as we must get back to winning ways.
