Duncan Castles has claimed that Manchester United are not even close to agreeing on a new deal with David de Gea despite Jose Mourinho claiming that he will sign a new contract as soon as possible.

Castles wrote in his column for Daily Record (h/t Express) that De Gea isn’t signing the deal anytime soon:

“Manchester United’s best footballer has not signed a new contract. Nor, it seems, is he on the point of doing so.

“There is no agreement in place for David de Gea to commit the next five years of his career to the Premier League club.”

The journalist added that De Gea wants to be paid on par with the highest earners at the club.

“For the last four seasons, and five of the last six, the PFA has voted de Gea the best goalkeeper in England.

“For four of the past five seasons de Gea has been the Manchester United supporters’ or players’ Player of the Year. On three occasions he has taken both awards.

“With that level of performance and consistency de Gea believes he should be on a par with the two highest-paid players at Old Trafford – Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez.”

De Gea is one of the best players in the world and retaining his services will be key to our chances of winning silverware.

If the player wants a lucrative contract, we should go all out and give it to him. The report from the Express claims that De Gea had been linked with a move to Real Madrid but the La Liga giants signed Thibaut Courtois in the summer.

De Gea was also quoted by the Express as being happy at United and hopefully, we can see Dave star at the club for a number of years.
