Matteo Darmian could be inching closer to a move away from Manchester United as Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis confirmed that the Serie A club is in negotiations to bring the right-back to Italy.

The Daily Mail claims that Jose Mourinho will not stand in the way of Darmian should an offer meet the value that United are looking for.

The report also claims that Napoli are looking to sign the 28-year-old right-back on loan this season but will look to ensure that the player is signed up on a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Laurentiis was quoted by Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli (h/t Daily Mail) as saying:

“We have asked for Darmian on a loan with a right to sign next summer.”

Darmian struggled for game time last season and only made 10 appearances for us all season. The 28-year-old is wanted by a few other Serie A clubs too as Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan are also looking to sign the Italian.

While we have signed Diogo Dalot as a right-back for the upcoming season, the young defender is injured. Antonio Valencia is also carrying a bit of a knock and it will be interesting to see just how we line up for the first game of the season.

There could be a few signings made by Mourinho before the end of the window but losing Darmian should not make any changes to our normal plans.

The Italian could not cut it under Mourinho and he should be able to find his feet at Napoli under Carlo Ancelotti.
