David de Gea did not have a World Cup to remember as he struggled to keep goals out of the net for the Spanish side. The team were eliminated by Russia in the round of 16 but Ian McGarry, who spoke to a Spanish source, has revealed why the Manchester United star wasn’t alright.

While speaking to the Transfer Window Podcast (h/t Express), McGarry claimed that De Gea saw himself as Real Madrid’s No.1 at some point during his career even though he is loved and wanted by United.

Madrid have been linked with a move for De Gea for a number of seasons but McGarry added that the Spanish giants have not made a “concrete offer” for the Spaniard.

“And I think the links of Alisson and Courtois with Madrid has somehow clouded his performances for Spain in Russia”, McGarry continued.

“He feels like if he doesn’t move to Real Madrid this summer then he feels his chance is gone.”

McGarry also added an interesting bit about us offering De Gea a contract which would make him the best-paid keeper in the world.

Almost every United fan knows the value of De Gea and trying to replace him would be impossible. The 27-year-old is a rock at the back for us and if we do lose him, irrespective of the amount we get, United would be a poorer club in terms of quality.

Hopefully, De Gea does sign a new deal with us and stays at the club for a number of years. Winning a few trophies might help too and this season could be really important for him and the club.
