Manchester United are set to switch their attention to a new left-back and will target Jose Luis Gaya of Valencia, according to The Mirror.
The 23-year-old is being viewed as a cheaper alternative to Alex Sandro of Juventus, as we seem to be priced out of a move for the Brazilian.
The report suggests that the Juventus man would be worth £50million while Gaya, who recently signed a new contract with the La Liga side, would be available for close to £30million.
Gaya played in 36 games in all competitions for Valencia last season and notched up three assists as well.
The search for a new left-back has intensified, given that we played 32-year-old Ashley Young as our first-choice last season.
Additionally, Luke Shaw’s future at the club continues to be doubtful and United must go out to sign a quality option for the left side.
The Spanish youngster can play even in the midfield, thus making sense for us to pursue a deal for Gaya over Sandro, – even if, comparatively, the Juventus man is a more complete defender.
Mourinho is adept at working with young players and he has experience of coaching in Spain, meaning he might know more about Gaya than Sandro. Also, spending £30million on someone like Gaya would be quite economical.
There is no doubt that we need to bring in a few players ahead of the season but if we sign a new left-back, our defence would be set for the upcoming season.
