Manchester United handed major boost as Tottenham refuse to meet £150,000-per-week demand of star man

There could be some major news for Manchester United fans regarding their defence as a report from the Times claims that Toby Alderweireld might be surplus to requirements at Tottenham and he could even force a move away from the London club.

We all know the problems between Alderweireld and Spurs. Tottenham are not willing to pay him the wages he wants. Alderweireld expects around £150,000-per-week but that is not something Spurs want to shell out and this impasse has been going on for quite a while.

The Belgian has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League and while it would be a major loss to the London club, getting Alderweireld to Manchester United would be one of the best deals that Jose Mourinho would be able to pull off.

The former Ajax man would be a great option to pair with Eric Bailly in the heart of our defence. The French defender has been out of action for a while as he recuperates from an injury and with Alderweireld alongside him, we might end up having one of the best centre-back pairings in the world.

There have been rumours of us moving for Samuel Umtiti but this transfer for Alderweireld makes more sense given that the Belgian already is one of the best in the Premier League and will not have to worry about acclimatising to the country either.

We do have a bit of a history of buying players from Tottenham with Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Carrick joining us in recent years and hopefully, Alderweireld becomes the next player to join us.

Mourinho does have a tendency to get the players that he wants. There is no doubt that we need upgrades on Chris Smalling and Phil Jones and the 28-year-old Alderweireld still has a few years of top-level football left in him.

It will be interesting to see if Tottenham let go of their man, given that they can extend his contract for another year but if we do put in a big money bid, it could be enough to turn Daniel Levy’s head around.
