Gareth Bale has blocked a blockbuster transfer to Bayern Munich after they made a £86m bid for the Real Madrid winger, according to reports in Spain.

The Wales international is expected to leave Santiago Bernabeu at the end of the campaign, with recurrent injuries blighting his career. The start-stop stint with the Spanish giants due to his fitness issues has seen him fail to nail a regular place in Zinedine Zidane’s team.

Bale has plenty of competition for his position in the Real team when fit, with the likes of Isco and Marco Asensio pressing their cases in his absence. Although Real deem him as a player who is surplus to requirements, it appears that the winger is keen to return back to the Premier League.

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Bale in recent transfer windows, while Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have also shown interest in him. According to Spanish news outlet Diario Gol, the 28-year-old will only leave the European champions if there is a Premier League this summer. That is the sole reason why Bale has rejected a fantastic opportunity to join Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

The report adds that the Bavarians are in search of a long-term replacement for Arjen Robben and have considered Bale to be the perfect player to replace ageing Dutchman. Bale, who joined Real Madrid in 2013, has won a La Liga title and three Champions Leagues in his time at the Bernabeu.

However, after making 48 appearances in the 2014/15 campaign, he played 31 times the following year and is currently finding it difficult to consistently perform due to his fitness problems. Yet, he has netted 6 times in his 9 La Liga appearances this season. He scored a brace in the 7-1 win over Deportivo last time out and would look to feature against Valencia at the weekend.

It is believed that the Wales international is enthusiastic about returning to Tottenham, with a view to work with Mauricio Pochettino, while Chelsea might consider him to bulk up their squad. United’s interest in Bale is no secret, with Jose Mourinho publicly declaring that he was a transfer target since the summer.

But having recently completed the signing of star winger Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal, the United manager has considerably cooled down his interest in the former Southampton man and any move will have to wait until the summer.
