Barcelona fear Manchester United could trigger £52,000-a-week, £54m defender’s release clause

Samuel Umtiti

Manchester United could be swooping in for one of the best defenders in La Liga as his parent club face financial issues. The Sun (h/t Metro) carries a report claiming we want to sign Samuel Umtiti from Barcelona as the La Liga giants prepare for some big money signings.

Umtiti is one of the best defenders at the club but makes only £52,000-a-week, which is far below what most of the stars at the Catalan club make. The 24-year-old wants to earn more and we could double or even triple his salary should he decide to join our club.

While he is doing a great job for the La Liga leaders, Barcelona do need to reduce their wage bill as they look to sign Philippe Coutinho and Antoine Griezmann. The two players are their top targets and would have to be paid in six figures each, something they cannot really afford now. But selling Umtiti and a few other players could free up a lot of space on the wage bill.

Barcelona are aware of our interest in the player and reports claim that we could sign him up in the summer. The 24-year-old would make a wonderful pairing with Eric Bailly and even Victor Lindelof if things go as planned.

The Catalan giants aren’t always known for their defence but they seem to be fixed on signing two attacking players and that would mean that Umtiti could be one of the players to be sold off.

The defender is still young and can do a great job for us but it will be tough to pry him away from the La Liga giants. At the moment, the side is one of the best in Europe and seem set to picking up the league title and are favourites also for the UEFA Champions League title as well.

Jose Mourinho does need some reinforcements in the summer and Umtiti would be incredible. But it does seem unlikely that we will sign him up anytime soon given that we will have to spend £54m but money has never been an issue for us.

The summer will be interesting, to say the least, and maybe, we can add more steel to our defence and make a better challenge for the title next season.
