Manchester United are the favourites to sign Atletico Madrid starlet Antoine Griezmann as the Ros Rojiblancos have now accepted that the Frenchman is set to leave the club – according to the Spanish journalist Guillem Balague.

The Frenchman was linked with a move to Manchester United throughout the summer, but with the Spaniards failing in their attempt to lift the transfer ban, the move failed to materialise. During the tenure, the Frenchman was asked about the possibility of him joining the Old Trafford and he had said it was “six out of 10.”

In the midst of all this, it was thought that Atletico were well aware that Griezmann would join United. They reportedly went on to agree on personal terms for then Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette. However, the entire transfer ban feud interrupted the proceedings and everything went down the drain.

The Frenchman, on his part, eventually ended up signing a new contract with Atletico. Griezmann was an absolute revelation last campaign, but there has been a slight drop in his form this season. Till date, the 26-year-old has only managed 3 goals, compared to 9 he scored last season at this time of the season.

He has already been substituted 5 times to date. The Frenchman was booed by his own fans when he was substituted, mainly due to the fact that he has been very open about his transfer dealings. Furthermore, his new contract reportedly has a £178million release clause which, according to Balague, will be reduced to £88.7million on 1 July next year.

Besides, the attacker himself has admitted that a move to Manchester United is a possibility. Quoting in his new biography, ‘Behind a smile, the life of the Little Prince told by himself’, the 26-year-old revealed,

In June, I extended my contract. I’m linked to the club until 2022.

“Although I might be missing out on titles, I have everything here to be happy but that does not mean to say I won’t go one day.

“I haven’t made that decision. It all depends on various factors. I have nothing against England except for the weather. Manchester United is a possibility.

“As much as I repeat that I am delighted at Atletico, I have a great coach and great team-mates, they regularly ask me about my future. I do not exclude anything.”

This time around, however, Manchester United won’t be the only club vying for his signature as reports have emerged that Barcelona have entered the fray as well. Things are getting interesting, to say the least!
