Manchester United chairman Ed Woodward often gets the stick for getting it wrong in the transfer market. There is no doubt that he’s a marketing genius and has brought commercial success to the club but his transfer market moves have always been iffy.

Maybe that’s why he’s happy that one of his prime acquisitions is doing well at the club and is ready to reward him with a hefty new offer. We are talking about Jose Mourinho, who according to latest reports in the Sun, is set to be offered a five-year new deal worth £65m.

The arrival of Mourinho, to be fair, has lifted some of the burdens off Woodward. His charisma was enough to attract new players from the market easily which probably wasn’t the case during the earlier reigns of David Moyes or Louis van Gaal.

Whatever critics may say, Mourinho was successful in moulding the careers of a couple of United players. The upsurge in the form of Antonio Valencia on the right-hand side of the defence is largely due to Mourinho. He has improved so much that it is no exaggeration to say that Valencia is currently one of the best right-backs in the Premier League.

The Portuguese tactician was also able to win the support of Old Trafford faithful as the famed attacking game is back in play. It is still early days in the Premier League but going by what we have seen so far, United are going to be one of the most feared teams in the League.

Unlike his predecessors, Mourinho has been firm with the type of players he wants. The signings of Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic this summer is a signal of intent that Jose means business.

United is still a ‘work in progress’ but the initial signs under Mourinho are very positive. He has taken some burden off the shoulders of Woodward and that probably is the reason why the club chairman is impressed.

The impression is so good that Mourinho could be offered the best terms and a longer deal. There is time left on his current deal but tying him down to a longer deal shows the club’s confidence in the way Mourinho is leading the charge.
