Medical Done: Manchester United Complete Third Summer Signing

Manchester United are closing in on concluding a move for Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic, as per reports from Sky Sports.

Sky sources further report that Matic has been allowed to join a direct Premier League title rival ‘as a goodwill gesture’ because of his invaluable contributions in Chelsea’s Premier League triumph in recent years. While The Guardian reports that no official fee has been announced, Sky Sports quotes that a £40million fee has been agreed between the two clubs.

Earlier it was reported that Chelsea were adamant on their £50million valuation of the player, but it now seems like the same has not been the case anymore. Matic’s future was put in doubt as soon as Chelsea confirmed the signing of Tiemoue Bakayoko from AS Monaco. Although the young Frenchman will be missing the initial few games due to injuries, it was widely tipped that he would acquire the first team spot ahead of Matic, leaving the Serb’s contribution limited to bench.

Furthermore, Matic was also left out of Chelsea’s pre-season tour of China and was made to train alone. This sparked his exit rumours and Italian Champions Juventus were credited with an interest, but the Turin outfit rather decided to turn their attention towards Paris Saint-Germain’s Blaise Matuidi, as well as Sevilla midfielder Steven N’Zonzi, handing Manchester United a clear shot at landing Matic.

Following this, M.E.N. has reported that Matic has already undergone his medical and an official announcement would be made today or tomorrow. The same source further quotes that Matic could well be handed his United debut in their friendly game against Sampdoria in Dublin on Wednesday, or maybe in United’s UEFA Super Cup encounter against Real Madrid on 8th of August.

Matic’s arrival at Old Trafford will serve as a big boost for Jose Mourinho ahead of this all-important Premier League campaign. Matic is expected to be slotted alongside Ander Herrera and would replace Marouane Fellaini, who is close to completing his move to Galatasaray. The Guardian has reported that a €4m (£3.6m) fee has been agreed between United and Galatasaray. Fellaini will sign a four-year deal with the Turks.

Matic will become Mourinho’s third summer signing following the arrival of Victor Lindelof from Benfica and Romelu Lukaku from Everton.
