Manchester United Receive Boost in the Hunt for Defender With £56m Release Clause

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho

Manchester United have received a major boost in their efforts to land a top defender in the summer, as Atletico Madrid are reportedly ready to drop their asking price for Jose Gimenez, according to Daily Star. The 22-year-old has been one of the finest players for Atletico this season. Yet, there are suggestions that the club may be ready to give in to the wishes of the player by allowing him to join a bigger club. Atletico

Yet, there are suggestions that the club may be ready to give in to the wishes of the player by allowing him to join a bigger club. Atletico seem to have achieved their peak under Diego Simeone. Despite the valiant efforts of the squad, they were unable to make it to the Champions League final, as they lost to Real Madrid on aggregate. As a result, Atletico are set to end the season empty-handed. Despite being only 22, it is understood that Gimenez wants to be winning trophies

Despite being only 22, it is understood that Gimenez wants to be winning trophies straight away and he sees the opportunities of the same elsewhere. The player has a release clause of £56million, but fresh reports have claimed that Atletico may be interested in negotiating a lower fee for the defender. This is due to the defender entering the last year of his contract. As the player is still under 23, Atletico stand to receive a fee if the player leaves on a free transfer. However, this would be substantially less than his transfer valuation.

Atletico are aware of the interest from United and Arsenal. The former are likely to be favourites for the signature of the player. The ability to win major trophies and the significant wage increase are factors that could swing the deal in favour of United. Gimenez will cost a significantly less amount in terms of transfer fees while commanding roughly the same wages.

It is possible that Manchester United are planning to buy a partner for the young and dynamic Eric Bailly, who has been top notch for us this season.

Do you think Gimenez will be a good fit at Manchester United?
