Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly been in touch with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez over a swap deal that will see the club exchange their top players in the squads. According to Express, Manchester United are ready to let David de Gea leave the club and make a return to Spanish football, while the Red Devils are keen on bringing in James Rodriguez in return. The Colombian cost an incredible £71million a couple of years ago, but he has failed to break the dominance of Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo at the Santiago Bernabeu.

As a result, a swap deal between the two parties seems like the ideal solution, especially with Manchester United searching for a new centre-forward. The injury to Zlatan Ibrahimovic coupled with the uncertainty surrounding Wayne Rooney means that Manchester United will be short on numbers in the offensive areas next season. As a result, the club will be very keen on signing a new forward.

Rodriguez may have fallen down the pecking order at Real Madrid, but the Spanish club will not let him leave for anything less than £60 million. However, they are so desperate to get David de Gea that Madrid may just be interested in swapping players without any additional cost.

Hence, United would be bringing in a £60 million striker who still has several years of football left in him. Rodriguez is only 25 and still has a long way to go in football.

De Gea was subjected to transfer rumours with Madrid a few years ago, but United persuaded him to stay at Old Trafford. Now, though, they are ready to offer the player a return back to Madrid where he spent much of his early career. After coming through the ranks at Atletico Madrid, he moved to United in the summer of 2013 for around £18million. If he is sold directly for a cash transfer, De Gea could end up costing more than Gianluigi Buffon. Since it is not an ideal solution for even Madrid who have vast financial resources, the Spanish club have opened up towards a swap deal.

The only issue may be Rodriguez’ desire to move to Old Trafford amidst interest from other top clubs. But the prospect of playing for a club like Manchester United should be enough to convince the Colombian.
