Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has revealed that 5 players will miss United’s clash vs West Brom this weekend as selection concerns continue to mount for the Red Devils.

The Reds are missing Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ander Herrera for the weekend encounter as both players are serving the final match of their suspension.

The United boss also confirmed that central defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones sustained injuries while away on national duty with England. Paul Pogba played no part in the international break with France after straining his hamstring in the Reds’ win over FC Rostov on 16 March.

Mourinho said: “So we lose four [players] and I think Paul Pogba is also out. So we lose five.”

The manager is awaiting the return of Sergio Romero, Antonio Valencia and Marcos Rojo from South America before being in a position to finalise his team for the game against the Baggies.

Marouane Fellaini suffered a minor toe injury but appears to be fit for West Brom’s visit and could partner Michael Carrick in midfield again. United’s only other central midfield alternative is Timothy Fosu-Mensah, who is yet to start in his preferred role for the first-team.

Chris Smalling injured Phil Jones during England training and the United No.4 could miss up to a month, having recently spent the month of February on the sidelines. Smalling was pictured sporting a leg brace on Monday evening and could also miss a chunk of United’s Premier League and Europa League run-in.

Herrera will serve the second of his two-game ban for being sent off at Chelsea. Even though he collected two yellow cards it was his second dismissal of the campaign, which triggered an additional ban of one game.

Ibrahimovic missed his team’s defeat against Chelsea in the FA Cup, and also the win against Middlesbrough, after he was charged for elbowing Bournemouth defender Tyrone Mings, and hence will be unavailable again.

Both Ander Herrera and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will return to the team for the clash against Everton on Tuesday.

It will be interesting to see how Mourinho tackles this sudden selection crisis.
