Fantastic Juan Mata – The Best And The Worst Rated Manchester United Players From Their 1-0 Win Over St Etienne

Manchester United had one leg in the next round of the Europa League round of 16 as they faced St Etienne in France. The Red Devils had taken a 3-0 lead going into the second leg and with almost a full-strength team out; they were favourites to continue their march for European glory.

United started the game brightly and it took them no time to get into the lead thanks to a great play by Juan Mata. The Spaniard crossed in brilliantly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan was ever present to score the opening goal.

The away side did have some worries as St Etienne started to put more pressure and Eric Bailly was sent off for two bookable offences in the second half. The Red Devils held on and made it to the last 16 and we provide the player ratings for the Premier League side.

Sergio Romero – 7/10

The Argentine did really well in the first half by coming off the line and also made a decent save. St Etienne didn’t trouble him all that much though.

Ashley Young – 8/10

Young was great in attack and did extremely well by tracking back whenever the Red Devils were in a spot of bother.

Eric Bailly – 6/10

Bailly did start the first half well and it was expected that he would do well till the end of the game but was sent off for two bookable offences.

Chris Smalling – 7/10

The Englishman didn’t really have much to worry about, despite the home side attacking relentlessly in the second half.

Daley Blind – 7/10

Blind linked up well with the attack and did pretty well in defence, though he should have cut out some of the threats down the left.

Michael Carrick – 7/10

Carrick was his normal self in midfield as he kept the passes ticking and ensured United recycled the ball really well.

Paul Pogba – 6/10

The Frenchman was up against his brother but his first half performance was not all that great and the former Juventus man didn’t really justify his price tag either.

Marouane Fellaini – 5/10

The Belgian was a bit of a miss in midfield once again and was a surprise as to what he actually does in the side.

Juan Mata – 9/10

The Spaniard was easily the man of the match as he did extremely well in the attack and was a threat the entire night with his movement and running. He also provided the assist for Mkhitaryan to score the only goal.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 7/10

The Armenian got Manchester United off to a great start as he scored via a deft flick to beat Ruffier in the near post. Mkhitaryan was taken off early in the first half however, and Marcus Rashford was brought on.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic – 7/10

The Swede was a little off colour in the game and didn’t really have a lot of chances to get a goal.

Substitutes

Marcus Rashford – 7/10

The Englishman came on early in the first half and did well down the left-hand side but should have done more to threaten the opposition goal.

Bastian Schweinsteiger– 6.5/10

The German was brought on to replace Carrick and did alright in midfield.

Marcos Rojo – 7/10

The Argentine was brought into the game to protect United’s lead after the sending off and he did his job well.
