The new Chinese investors at Inter have already made it clear that they intend to bring Inter back to their glory days and it seems like the groundwork is already on. Inter were earlier linked with Roma’s Kostas Manolas, a reported Arsenal target, and now Calcio Mercato has claimed that they have turned their heads towards Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian. While Ricardo Rodriguez has also been linked with Inter, it is now looking evident that Inter are looking for a major reshuffle at the back.
Matteo Darmian has been a regular fit for Manchester United this season and has managed to impress his Portuguese manager. He has featured on both the flanks and has made life difficult for his competitors at Old Trafford. The move does look unlikely given the state of affairs at Manchester. However, United’s resolve to hold on to their full back will be put to test, with Inter overflowing with cash and Italy being Darmian’s home.
Despite United being a shadow of their former selves ever since the great Sir Alex left the United hot seat, they’ve remained giant and have managed to attract top talents to the club. There is no obvious reason as to why United must sell a full back like Darmian. It is not easy to find quality full backs in the market and it might well turn out to be a blunder from United to let go of him, with two and a half years left in his contract.
Jose Mourinho is not a manager who would let his players leave on cheap and it will not be easy for Inter to convince United to sell one of their top players. It will be interesting to see how this move develops over the next few months. At this moment, Antonio Valencia is the only reliable right back for United and should any injury concern appears, United will be short in numbers. Besides, with United being active in four different competitions, a sustainable depth is essential for the Red Devils.
Although there is this exciting young Dutch defender named Timothy Fosu-Mensah, he certainly needs time to get in to the good books of Mourinho and in that case, keeping Darmian for at least another year looks feasible.
With a long way left till the end of the season, only time will decide Darmian’s future. But right now, it safe to say United fans can sleep in peace.
