Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah was one of the big names to emerge from the youth team in the last few years. Former boss Louis van Gaal was clearly a big fan of the Dutchman as he made eight appearances in the league last season. It seemed like new boss Jose Mourinho also had a lot of faith in the youngster, as he was given a new contract a few months ago. The new contract will see the player remain at the club until the summer of 2020, although United do have the option of an additional year in his contract.
However, the current campaign is turning out into a nightmare for the 19-year-old, as he has had only one minute of Premier League action this season. His only starts have been in the Europa League and the League Cup. Even though Mourinho has not had the opportunity to change a settled back four, Timothy Fosu-Mensah would have been expecting first-team opportunities on a significantly higher number. As it is, his development appears to have stalled. Fosu-Mensah’s camp is concerned about the situation and are mulling about the possibility of a loan move away from United, according to reports.
It is reported that United have no interest in letting Fosu-Mensah leave even on a loan deal. The situation will certainly perplex the player considering that he is not featuring in the first team anyway. BBC reporter, Steve Stone, has suggested that around five Premier League clubs are showing interest in the youngster, while several more in the Championship would be ready to take him anytime. Since regular football is extremely important for a youngster rather than training with some of the best players of the world, Fosu-Mensah is of the opinion that he should move away from Old Trafford.

Antonio Valencia has made the right back spot his own. While it was thought that the Ecuadorian may leave the club at the end of the season, Fosu-Mensah has received another setback with the 31-year-old set to stay at the club until the summer of 2018 after United activated an option in his contract. Barring some injuries in the defence of positions, the probability of Fosu-Mensah featuring in the first team seems highly unlikely at this moment. The defender will also be concerned about the club being linked with several defenders like Victor Lindelof and Manolas, players who would cost in excess of £30 million.
United, though, are understood to be concerned about the lack of development shown by Cameron Borthwick-Jackson even after the move to Wolverhampton on a loan deal. As a result, Jose Mourinho feels that Fosu-Mensah would be better off under his direct management.
