Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho recently spoke about Marcus Rashford being the DNA of the club and how he would like to keep such players in the squad. Yet, the glowing praises from the Portuguese manager has not exactly translated into time on the pitch for the young England international. Rashford has started only three matches in his last nine appearances, while one has to go back to the middle of November to witness the 19-year-old completing 90 minutes of action in a game – against Arsenal in the 1-1 draw.

Rashford’s last two appearances came in the cup competitions – FA Cup and EFL Cup – and he was not even brought on as a substitute when United were trailing 1-0 against Liverpool on Sunday. Now, it has emerged that the attacker’s inability to feature in the first team much has alerted a lot of other clubs. Rather than clubs from the Premier League, the Sun has reported that Sevilla have emerged as the likely destination for the player.

The La Liga club are flying high under the regime of Jorge Sampaoli, and the recent 2-1 win over Spanish giants Real Madrid has put them second in the table ahead of Barcelona.

Now, Sevilla are ready to take Rashford on a loan deal until the end of the season. Since Manchester United have not made any moves in this January transfer window so far, it remains to be seen if Jose Mourinho will be keen on allowing a player to leave midway through the campaign. Rashford is clearly in the plans of Mourinho, but the Portuguese has always preferred playing experienced internationals rather than talented youngsters. Even when Rashford has been utilised, it has been on the wings and it has not necessarily helped him improve his goals-to-game ratio.

Even though Rashford did score twice in the 4-0 win over Reading, these were his first goals for the club since scoring once in the 4-1 win over Leicester City back in September. Even Mourinho has said that the player’s lack of goals is not an issue, it would undoubtedly have a negative impact when it comes to selection. The 19-year-old watched Anthony Martial start in the game against Liverpool ahead of him.

After having been reduced to the role of a super sub for much of the last few months, it may be possible that Rashford will demand promises that he will receive first-team opportunities from now until the end of the season before turning down the offer from Sevilla. Very few English players have joined Spanish clubs on a loan deal, and it may very well be a great opportunity for Rashford considering that he is not amongst the first-team regulars at Old Trafford. Yet, Sevilla themselves are in a great form and it remains to be seen if there is any truth in the rumours.
