Two Players Who Would Be A Force To Be Reckoned With At Manchester United If January Deals Are Completed

Gabriel Barbosa

Mourinho

Manchester United squad finally looks like a bit settled, producing an excellent run of form in their last few games. Despite their current performances, there are a few reasons as to why Jose Mourinho should look to bolster his squad.

Firstly, the Red Devils are currently in the sixth spot in the Premier League and will require quality additions to get them back in the title race. United are already 13 points off the leaders Chelsea and cannot afford any slip-ups, with games coming thick and fast. Also, United are through to the knockout phase of the UEFA Europa League and will need good squad depth to bring the title home that would automatically secure them a Champions League spot, next season.

Lastly, United will need quality replacements in case their important players get injured or miss any matches. United will require a robust centre-back to give their squad stability and balance, especially as Eric Bailly is set to leave on international duty to play in the African Cup of Nations. Bailly who plays for the Ivory Coast, might not be available until the second week of February should he and his side reach the finals of the African Cup of Nations.

The two players that United should look to sign in this transfer window are:

  1. Victor Lindelof

This 22-year-old Swedish defender is one of the brightest talents currently in Europe. He has been in great form for his club Benfica and is one of the first names on the team sheet for Sweden. Apart from being a pillar in defence, this right footed youngster has great control over the ball and has the ability to pick out an attacker with a sublime long pass. Such attributes will make him a perfect fit in the current United side, managed by Jose Mourinho. The United boss likes his team to play fast and direct counter attacking football, and Lindelof will certainly make United a stronger defensive unit and a deadlier proposition in the attack.

United supporters will be glad to know that United are about to make a £37m bid for the Benfica man and are in prime position, ahead of Chelsea and other big clubs, to secure his services. When asked at a news conference whether the youngster would be a fit in the United side, his compatriot Zlatan Ibrahimović was all praise for Lindelof, saying,

“I think he’s good enough for the big clubs out there. It’s up to him what he wants. Whatever he chooses will be good for him.”

Though Benfica are reluctant to sell their star, United have received a major boost in their pursuit of the Swedish International as reports confirm that the player is also keen on a move to Old Trafford in the coming transfer window.  Despite the strong partnership between Rojo and Jones in recent weeks, United will be looking to complete this valuable addition to the side.

  1. Gabriel Barbosa

Gabriel Barbosa

Gabriel Barbosa, who plays for the Brazilian national team, is tipped by many experts as the next big star in football. This rising star not only has the raw pace and tenacity to dribble past any defender who comes in his path with ease but also has the skill and finesse to find a teammate or to put the ball past the goalkeeper. He can create magic with his left foot and has a real eye for goal. The 20-year-old has the spark to create something out of nothing, a quality that United require to put them back in the contention for the title and turn Old Trafford back into the “Theatre of Dreams”.

Even though the former Santos player has just signed for Inter Milan in the summer transfer window, Manchester United have a chance to sign the young attacker, who can not only play as a forward but also attacking midfielder. Since his arrival, Gabriel Barbosa has only featured twice for his new side, and his agent has been very vocal about his criticism of the whole situation and claims that his player is being overlooked.

Recently, Inter Milan manager, Stefano Poli, confirmed that the player would be allowed to leave the club if he puts in the transfer request and due to the lack of game time there is a high probability that Barbosa might just do that. With Mourinho looking to offload some United players like Memphis Depay, Ashley Young, and Lingard, there would be enough room for Barbosa to fit in.

Though United have been linked with James Rodriguez, Barbosa would prove to be a better option. Firstly, he would cost much less as compared to the Columbian, who is a few years older than the Brazilian. Secondly, Barbosa plays with much more intensity as compared to the Real Madrid star, who would find it difficult to fit into Mourinho’s setup and cope up with the physicality of the premier league.

United need to act fast if they want to secure the services of the dynamic attacker, with Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Seville, all in the hunt to sign the Brazilian. After the incident with Gabriel Jesus, who Guardiola and Manchester City managed to prise away from Old Trafford, Mourinho and Manchester United can make a strong statement to their city rivals by beating others teams to Barbosa’s signature.

After the arrival of the likes of Paul Pogba, Ibrahimovic, Bailly and Mkhitaryan, United look a quality side, but with these two additions the Red Devils would be a force to be reckoned with!
