Herrera And Valencia The Only Bright Light: The Best And The Worst Rated Manchester United Players vs Chelsea

Ray Wilkins thinks Jose Mourinho is still trying to work out what his best Manchester United team is

Jose Mourinho’s comeback to the Stamford Bridge for the first time since being sacked last season did not come to a good end as the Red Devils were taught a stern lesson by a merciless Chelsea side on Sunday. Goals from Pedro, Gary Cahill, Kante and Eden Hazard gave Mourinho his heaviest defeat as a United manager and have left the Red Devils side with plenty of work to do ahead of the rest of the season. It is not a game that the United fans will remember for a long time and here are the player ratings for their side:

David de Gea (5):

Made a couple of important saves on the night but just couldn’t provide enough cover to stop the humiliation on the night.

Antonio Valencia (6):

Was all over the place at the back as he was often found wanting in defense at the Bridge. Was also not too helpful in attack on a forgettable night.

Eric Bailly (5):

Ended his night prematurely after picking up an injury but was nervous and shaky in the time he was on the field.

Chris Smalling (3):

One of the worst performances by the United defender, Smalling was at fault for the first two goals as he left his side with little chance on the night.

Daley Blind (4):

Wilkins does not think Ander Herrera (left) is the right player to control a game from midfield for United

A poor performance from the Dutchman who failed to keep hold of the ball and gave away possession too cheaply for his side’s liking.

Ander Herrera (6):

Put in a decent shift in the middle of the park but could not do enough to have a direct effect on the game on the night.

Marouane Fellaini (3):

Was a poor personnel in the midfield but had to be subbed off after picking up an injury in the first half.

Jesse Lingard (5):

Produced a moment or two of excitement but was just not consistent enough to help his side on the night against a solid defense from Chelsea.

Paul Pogba (5):

Still unable to prove his price tag, Pogba had another forgettable game as he failed to have any kind of an influence on the game.

Marcus Rashford (5):

Stuck to his task on the right by providing width when needed but did nowhere close to enough to break the hosts on the night.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (5):

Did not get enough service up front to effect the game and should have taken his close range chance at 1-0. But generally not at the level that is expected from him.

Subs:

Juan Mata (5):

Came in early in the second half but did not have enough time to effect the game on the night.

Marcos Rojo (5):

Replaced Eric Bailly in the second half but failed to have any kind of an impact at the back on the left-side of the defense.

Anthony Martial (5):

Came in with just over 20 minutes to play and did not have enough time to settle into the game and create problems for the hosts.
