What Mancheter United Should Do To Make Pogba Click?

Pogba

When Manchester United announced the world record capture of Paul Pogba with now infamous tagline #POGBACK, everyone was sure he would capture headlines with his industrious performance without a doubt. Fast forward two months; well, he is covering the headlines, but for all different reasons. Did pogba became a poor performer overnight?

Absolutely no. Yes, he missed a few goal scoring opportunities and uncharacteristically lost balls, but he seems to be trying too hard. He is eager to show Old Trafford that he is the man. Well, Carragher rightly pointed out that Pogba is like a School Kid playing without discipline, but he is giving out his class in those nice little turns and twists, leaving opponents dead and getting in to good scoring positions.

So how Mourinho can solve the Pogba problem?

First we need to understand what United expects from him. This United team have goals aplenty in their forward line. Just because he cost 89 millions doesn’t mean he has to bang in goals week in and week out. His stat at Juventus reads 28 goals in 4 seasons.

He is a different kind of beast that gets the game moving in the middle of the pitch. An engine, Pogba just needs to get the ball from box to box. He needs someone experienced in middle of the pitch who can anchor when he moves forward. Fellaini can do that but he is reckless. While Schneiderlin is a good choice, he is still untested at this level and probably one for next season.

Even though Herrera has been a prolific figure so far, we think Carrick is a rightful partner for Pogba. Sir Alex would have had all the fancy midefielders he wanted but he knew how underrated Carrick was and stuck with him. He can calm down Pogba’s nerves and is more than capable of getting the ball from defense to Pogba or Mata to start an attack.

Pogba by no means is a defensive midfielder but Carrick is. Occasional tracking back is fine but he should be higher up the pitch pinging passes to Ibrahimovic and Rashford. Carrick can calm down the counters of the opposition and this could unleash Pogba. The has that footballing brain and his feet are full of skills. Mourinho should make the two work in tandem.

Also mourinho should protect him from the English press and keep his confidence intact. Against Watford he hit a screamer against the woodwork, that even Paul Scholes would be proud of. If he keeps his confidence high, he will eventually come come to his best but for that he needs to be left in peace. We should not forget he is still 23 and coming from Italian league where things move slower compared to the Premier League.

I have no doubt the he will be a bona-fide Premier League superstar for United soon. he just needs to keep his head up and work on his game.
