Forget It Mourinho – 2 Reason Why Manchester United Should Not Sign This Portuguese Veteran

Fonte

The transfer window is approaching to its conclusion and with just two days left, almost all the Premier League clubs are trying to lure some stellar names into their side. Most of the top clubs from the Premier league have done a great business so far and thus, it is fair to say that this was the most exciting transfer window of all time.

Talking specifically, the Red half of Manchester, Manchester United, have done a great business so far as they have brought in some important names that could actually lift the confidence of the current members and can challenge for the title.

The manager, as promised, has brought in four players, yet many believe that there is still a room for improvement and right at this very moment, Jose Fonte, Southampton’s skipper, is being heavily linked with a move to Trafford. According to the reports from Daily Record, the manager is looking to strengthen his back line in order to challenge for the title, and for the same, he has identified his countryman, Jose Fonte.

The 32-year-old veteran is surely a great prospect in the Premier League and given his experience in the competition, he could really lay a marker and Manchester United could provide him a platform to achieve the silverwares he thoroughly deserves, but we personally believe that the Devils should really avoid the signing this 32-year-old Portuguese star and here are the three reasons why:

  1. A Potential barrier for Daley Blind and Jones-

Thanks to the injury concerns last season, the versatile midfielder (also a defender), switched his role and partnered up with Chris Smalling. Many criticised the shift and believed that the Dutch star will fail to match the physical approach of the Premier League, but Blind certainly had other ideas. Initially, he needed a little guidance from the experienced Mike Smalling (Chris), but then he picked up the momentum and started giving some match winning performances, most notably against the bigger teams.

But soon after the arrival of Mourinho, many suggested that his role as a centre back would be cut short and the arrival of Eric Bailly almost supported the rumours, but it turns out that Mourinho is in complete favour of the Dutch and till date, he has started all the games for the team and has pushed Chris Smalling to a bench role. Now, right at this very moment, United have four perfect centre backs in which Bailly is the one who is a sure starter and for the rest, Smalling, Blind and Jones will be battling for the starting spot. So, United still need a new centre back? Well, Fonte is a great prospect in the game, but he surely will be a barrier for Blind and Jones in the team and hence, their playing time will automatically be cut short.

  1. Less first team opportunities-

The 32-year-old centre-back was a pillar for the Saints last term and has played every single game in the Premier League, but one. As mentioned earlier, the Portuguese defender can surely bring defensive stability to the team, but the move might cost him some game time, which Southampton are giving him on a regular basis.

As United have recently brought Eric Bailly, who has earned three man of the match awards in just four games, and already have Chris Smalling battling for the honour, Fonte’s first team action, especially in the Premier League might hinder. As analysed from the past, Jose Mourinho usually loves to stick with a particular pair in the defence, and solely for that reason, we think that this deal should not happen.
