Talking Tactics: 3 Formations Jose Mourinho Can Play With Pogba In It

Manchester United have confirmed that Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba has been given permission to have a medical.

The 23-year-old was set to return to training with his club on Sunday but he is now put to be announced as Manchester United’s fourth summer signing more or less this week.

Jose Mourinho will have to adjust the team a bit differently now that he has another centre-midfield whom he will probably prefer the most at his position.

Paul Pogba can perform every role there is for a centre midfielder. He can pass well (both long and short), dribble past players, defend well when the backline needs the support, and also score goals too. He is mainly the sort of player who just works for the team. He creates chances and delivers almost-perfect balls to his teammates. Plus, the effort he puts in makes him thoroughly versatile at the heart of the midfield.

Let’s take a look at three different kinds of formations Mourinho can play the team with Pogba in it.

  1. 4-2-3-1

The default formation for Mourinho can still be used with the inclusion of the French midfielder. The 23-year-old can manage at any of the ‘Centre Attacking Position’ in this formation (centre, right or left) probably along with the likes of Rooney and Mkhitaryan alongside him.

  1. 4-1-2-2-1 (wide)

Weird formation for a manager like Jose Mourinho to use, but why not? Maybe on days where he feels like his team should mainly concentrate on attacks and he beautifully lines up the overwhelming midfielders.

Paul Pogba can obviously adjust into this formation making sure that the boss doesn’t snub any other important player like Martial, Rooney or Herrera from the match, putting him just ahead of the centre defensive midfielder alongside a player like Herrera maybe. And the skipper and Henrikh ahead of him in a more attacking role.

  1. 4-4-2 (diamond)

The world record signing’s form can outshine others with a formation like this. His positioning at either the left or the right midfield can do wonders for the team, with him backing the centre-attacking midfielder (probably Rooney), having Martial on the other side, and getting more chances to deliver excellent passes to the Swedish striker. As this formation helps the team to break through the opposition’s half with either kind of passing play. Pobga will have a better chance to showcase his abilities.
