Does This Tricky Dutch Winger Have A Future Under The Special One?

Memphis Depay had a difficult time at Manchester United

Jose Mourinho is tipped to bring the glory days back to Manchester United. Manchester United, who had to face an utter humiliation from the past couple of seasons, might have found the perfect man to lead them to glory. It is fair to say that the next campaign of the Premier League will be one of the toughest battlegrounds in the world as the top names like Antonio Conte and Pep Guardiola have arrived.

The Portuguese tactician wasted no time at all as soon after his arrival, he made the Ivorian professional Eric Bailly his first signing of the summer. Then soon after the elimination of Sweden from the Euro 2016, he signed Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a free transfer. Well, United needed a striker badly and as we all are aware of the fact that Mourinho work wonders with a lone striker, it is safe to say that the Big Swede will become of the best buys in the league.

The Red Devils have also sealed a deal for 27-year-old Armenian international, Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The current Borussia Dortmund man excellent a wonderful performance in the Bundesliga last year and refused to sign a new contract with the Yellow Wall to force a move to Old Trafford.

But in between all these stories, there remains a question about the future of many players from the current squad. Surely the focus is on Juan Mata, but besides him, everyone has forgotten about Memphis Depay.

The 22-year-old Dutch international was signed by the former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal from the Dutch side PSV, and the player was expected to guide the team to its glory, but he lost his place to the 20-year-old Anthony Martial instead. He finished his first season with the Devils by making 45 appearances, most of which came as a substitute and scored some handful goals.

Just a season before he joined United, he had a terrific time with the Dutch side PSV as he was a regular starter for the team and scored 28 goals in just 40 appearances. The Dutch international failed poorly to replicate that  form at the Old Trafford and was named as one of the worst buys of the season. It is understood that a player, who excelled some brilliant years in Netherlands cannot be judged by a single season.

Depay has his issues with temperaments, but besides that, he is a pure joy to watch. The Daily Telegraph described Depay as “a fearsome striker of the ball with his right foot, but is usually used an as inverted left winger who cuts onto his right foot. A pacey and tricky player, his direct running makes him a difficult opponent for defenders”

Depay’s weapon is his speed and his shooting abilities. As mentioned earlier, he loves to cut inside the box from the wider areas, but his moves were cancelled out with ease by the experienced PL defenders. He became a predictable player and eventually started resting on the bench.

With the arrival of Jose Mourinho, many believe that Memphis will be a ‘Hazard Figure’ for Mourinho at Old Trafford, yet there are many, who believes that Depay has no future under Mourinho. We totally accept the fact that he failed to prove his worth in the Premier League, but maybe it was the pressure he was forced upon himself. Wearing a number 7 jersey at Old Trafford is a compliment in itself and since he spent his previous time at Netherlands, which is not at all same as the Premier League, he failed. Even Eden Hazard had to face a rough phase at the time of his arrival.

So, we do honestly feel that Mourinho should seriously consider Memphis Depay for the next season and he surely deserves another chance.
