Should Manchester Invest In A Marquee Striker This Summer?

Things are looking up for Manchester United after Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Watford moved them level on points with fourth-placed Manchester City and boosted their chances of Champions League qualification for the next season. It hasn’t been easy for the injury-hit unlucky side this season. The team with twelve players injured has still somehow managed to be at a decent standing in the Premier League.

Manchester United has been the weakest in the attacking department.

Martial Rooney

Wayne Rooney is still struggling to score goals as his he did in his younger days, before he starting playing as a midfielder. Anthony Martial is a brilliantly talented young player who has shown some great potential for a player of his age. The youth academy player, Marcus Rashford was given a chance to start for United in the absence of Martial and Rooney due to injuries and he rose to the occasion by scoring 4 goals in his first 2 matches.

Rashford is already being named as an upcoming star by many after seeing his performance in the only three games he has played. The 23-year-old striker, Will Keane is also out injured, and had recently undergone a surgery following his groin injury.

Van Gaal is yet to make a decision in the summer transfer window, whether to sign another striker or not.  Blamed for making terrible decisions since he has taken over the job, the Dutch boss will be in a dilemma till he gets the clear news of when the injured strikers will make their return, and if they will be back in their form or not.

Given how the team has performed this season, the weakest part has been the strike force. Even when Rooney and Martial were playing, the team was struggling to score goals.

The Red Devils need to invest decent amount of money in an experienced/marquee player, who they can count on. Van Gaal bought Anthony Martial from AS Monaco at the age of 19 for more than 50 million euros. Spending all that money on an inexperienced player wasn’t really a smart move. Letting go of Van Persie and Hernandez quickly, had resulted in a major setback already for the team.

A striker who can have traits of a clinical finisher with lots of experience playing in big competitions against big teams can make a huge impact on the game of Manchester United.
