3 Talking Points From Manchester United’s Win Over Arsenal Last Week

DREAM START FOR RASHFORD

Marcus Rashford

The 18 year old striker, who wasn’t even known to the fans 3 days ago, has left each and every fan cheering his name at his every move up the pitch. After scoring a brace on his debut in the midweek game against Midtjylland, the youngster gained popularity all of a sudden. It didn’t take long for him to repeat it on his Barclays Premier League debut.

Displaying the clinical finishing ability of an Andy Cole or Solskjaer, he gave United an advantage throughout the match by scoring one after the other in the beginning of the first half. Rashford showed a striker’s instincts to score Gabriel’s miscued clearance for the first goal, and came in the right place at the right time again to head in Jesse Lingard’s cross a few minutes later. He then went on setting up Ander Herrera’s lucky deflected goal.

YOUNGSTERS PERFORMING UP TO THE STANDARDS FOR UNITED

Even after being on an injury spree this season, LVG has been blessed with the talented youth players who have delivered well for the team. Being without 12 first-team players, the Dutch boss is left with very limited options for each position during the team selection.

Marcus Rashford has earned his hype with a brace in both the matches that he has played for the Reds.  But he wasn’t the only one to make his mark on the occasion. Jesse Lingard (23) and Varela (22) aided Rashford for both his goals.

Depay also performed well again after having one of his best games in this season against Midtjylland on Thursday.

James Weir and Fosu-Mensah, who were not known to most of the fans till they were announced in the line-up, made their debut and contributed towards the victory at Old Trafford.

SLOPPY ARSENAL

Another big-game defeat for Arsenal where they couldn’t perform up to their potential. With Gabriel and Koscielny making crucial defensive mistakes and Monreal missing the one-on-one chance to give his team an upper hand in the early minutes of the game.

The players looked disconsolate after conceding two goals within a short span of time making them rather nervous for the remaining game. Goals from Welbeck and Ozil gave the Gunners hope to at least, end the match as a tie but became sloppy when the time came for an equalizer in the later minutes of the second half. The much hyped Sanchez is finding it difficult to reproduce his last year’s form and had a very ineffective display against a much less experienced, Guillermo Varela.

Arsenal’s incapability to win big games is a threat to their title bid. After losing both matches to a comparatively poor Chelsea and drawing both with Liverpool, they had no excuse to let this one go out of control. A loss against an injury hit United is a sudden blow for their much awaited title dream. Leicester and Spurs are surely to be pleased over this result.
