It’s now or never for Louis Van Gaal and Manchester United. It’s time to show the famous spirit and fight they’re known for. United have been on a very poor run losing consecutive games against newly promoted teams, Bournemouth and Norwich. Louis Van Gaal has been taking all the blame, however the players have let him down massively. They have been lacking so much quality on the pitch.
Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata have been ridiculously poor. The players don’t seem to have any desire and it’s incredibly frustrating for the fans. No better day than Boxing Day to turn things around. No players return from injury for Man United however, Darmian might be back for the clash against Chelsea. This is how they might line-up against Stoke City.
David De Gea- One of the only players who looks worthy of wearing the Manchester United shirt. Has been absolutely brilliant this season once again.
Ashley Young- Although Varela has done a decent job; Young was pretty good against Norwich. He also provides more going forward and Van Gaal will count on his experience.
Chris Smalling- Smalling didn’t have the best of games versus Norwich however he has been one of the best defenders in the league this season.
Daley Blind- Phil Jones was absolutely horrific at centre-back last time out. Blind has done well when deployed here and he’s much better on the ball.
Cameron Borthwick-Jackson- With Rojo and Shaw out and Blind being deployed at centre-back, it could be the youngster in Borthwick-Jackson starting at left-back. He looked nervous at first but has done well since then.
Michael Carrick- With Schweinsteiger still suspended, Carrick will keep his place. He doesn’t get forward as much as he used to and thus his impact on the games is less. But with Schneiderlin back next to him, he’ll get a lot more freedom.
Morgan Schneiderlin- Schneiderlin simply has to start ahead of Marouane Fellaini. The Belgian was awful as a defensive mid against Norwich providing absolutely no cover. United’s record is much better when Schneiderlin is playing and he must start.
Anthony Martial- Ideally, Martial must play through the middle. But Mata has been awful and needs to be dropped. With Martial playing wide, it’ll allow Rooney to play up top and Herrera as number 10. Martial looked like one of the only players trying to score versus Norwich.
Ander Herrera- Herrera brings a different energy when he’s playing. With Mata’s poor form, Herrera deserves a start, especially since he’s done well when he’s been given the chance.
Memphis Depay- Memphis has been improving slowly. He looks more determined; he’s been making runs from the left trying to link with Rooney. He should keep his place on the left hand side.
Wayne Rooney- Wayne Rooney has been woeful. The service has been bad and he does have to go way too deep to get on the ball many times. But he has to improve.
