Predicted Manchester United Line Up To Face Bournemouth: Varela And Lingard To Start

It’s been a disappointing week for Manchester United. A 3-2 defeat in Germany meant that United were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League. However, they must not dwell on that now as a congested month follows. United’s form in the league has been decent, suffering only one defeat in the last 2 months. It is the lack of goals that is worrying as they were held to another 0-0 draw by West Ham at the weekend.

United were already without 7 first team players for the all important clash vs Wolfsburg. Darmian and Smalling have since then added to the list and Bastian Schweinsteiger’s suspension means United are possibly without 10 crucial players. For many weeks now, United fans have been chanting attack attack attack. They got what they wanted, however the defence fell apart. Absolutely static defending from United made it easy for Wolfsburg to net 3 in an action filled game. Louis Van Gaal’s position is under a massive spotlight now. They need to keep up the pressure at the top of the table and this how they possibly might line up against the Cherries.

Predicted Line-up:

David De Gea-

David De Gea has been excellent in goal once again this season. Even against Wolfsburg, if it wasn’t for De Gea, United would have probably conceded 6. Highest number of clean sheets in the league this season and there is no doubt he will start in goal.

Guillermo Varela-

He made his first team debut last week against West Ham and didn’t do too badly. Getting to make his full debut in the UCL, he had a shaky first half, but he made up for it in the second. He looked much more confident, didn’t provide that much space and looked to get forward on every occasion. With injuries to Darmian and Valencia, he should keep his place.

Paddy McNair-

He was made to play at right back against West Ham and he had a shocking first half. He was not up for it at all and was substituted at the interval. With injuries to Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo, McNair will probably have to be deployed at centre-back.

Daley Blind-

The Dutchman didn’t have a great game against Wolfsburg, getting caught out a few times while trying to play out from the back. However, he’s done well this season as a centre-back and should keep his place.

Ashley Young-

United’s left backs seem to have some seriously bad luck. First Shaw, then Rojo and now Darmian means United have very limited options now. It’ll be a tight call over youngster Borthwick-Jackson and Ashley Young. Young has done a good job whenever he’s been deployed as a full back. He’s also vastly more experienced and that could come in handy.

Michael Carrick-

With Schweinsteiger suspended, Carrick should return to the first team. He made a costly error which led to Wolfsburg’s third goal mid-week. However, United looked most likely to score when he came on against West Ham playing quick balls into the strikers looking to get things going. Playing alongside Schneiderlin will also give him more freedom to go forward.

Morgan Schneiderlin-

Morgan has been passed fit and there’s no doubt he should be brought straight back in. While Fellaini does give an added physical presence, he doesn’t give much more. Schneiderlin did well before West ham before being taken off with an injury.

Jesse Lingard-

Jesse Lingard has been one of United’s liveliest players off late. He looks to make things happen, he takes on defenders. He created problems down West Ham’s right side at the weekend. Although, his inexperience at time costs him. He should keep his place.

Juan Mata-

Mata has been very poor off-late and that continued in the Champions League game. He provided the assist for Anthony Martial’s goal but was non-existent after that. United have a lack of options up front with all the injuries and Mata should keep his place. He needs one good performance to regain his form.

Memphis-

His poor season continues. Had hardly any impact once again. Naldo and Dante were leaving big gaps and he couldn’t play a simple pass through, over hitting it on more than one occasion. When he came on against West Ham last weekend, he actually did a decent job. What was most impressive was his desire to win the ball back. He didn’t needlessly give it away either. Hopefully we can see more of that.

Antony Martial-

Struggling for goals off late but he opened the scoring in Germany. His movement is good and he’s often one of United’s best players on the pitch and also their most likely source of a goal.
