Manchester United put in another decent performance defeating West Brom 2-0 at Old Trafford. West Brom were very compact at the back for most of the game before Jesse Lingard broke the deadlock with a beautiful finish into the bottom right corner. Sessegnon had a very good chance to put the Baggies back on level terms, however, he headed wide from 6 yards out. A Juan Mata penalty in stoppage time sealed the 3 points for United.

Player Ratings:

David De Gea- 6

David De Gea had a relatively relaxed birthday as he had absolutely nothing to do.

Ashley Young- 6

With West Brom playing a defensive game, he didn’t have much to do at the back. However his distribution was poor and he often lost the ball trying to attack. Was eventually replaced by Phil Jones in the second half.

Chris Smalling- 7.5

Put in another solid performance as he completely nullified the threat of Rondon.

Daley Blind-7

Blind did an effective job and he’s once again forming a good partnership with Smalling in the centre of defence. His distribution was also very good.

Marcos Rojo- 7

Rojo continued his good form as he kept Sessegnon subdued. He looks to have made the left-back position his own in the absence of Luke Shaw.

Michael Carrick- 6.5

He played a few good solid passes, however, found it hard to find the gaps in a very compact backline. He did look to play a little quicker.

Bastian Schweinsteiger- 6.5

He kept the ball well and his passing was good however he couldn’t provide much of a threat in the final third.

Juan Mata- 6.5

An improved performance from Mata, but he failed to provide the spark needed to break down the defence. He missed a decent opportunity as he curled his shot wide early on in the game. He scored from the penalty spot in stoppage time with a very calmly taken penalty.

Wayne Rooney- 6

He didn’t make an obvious impact but as usual worked very hard throughout the game. He had to keep coming very deep to receive the ball. Was eventually substituted in the second half.

Jesse Lingard- 7.5

It turned out to be a great night for the youngster as he grabbed his first goal for Manchester United. He continued where he left off against CSKA as his added pace and dribbling ability threatened West Brom. His goal was very well taken as he curled it into the bottom right corner from just outside the area.

Anthony Martial- 6.5

Had a quieter game than normal. He had a few moments here and there and it was him who won the penalty leading to United’s second.

Substitutes:

Phil Jones- 6

Jones came on for Ashley Young and he did a decent job in the right-back role.

Ander Herrera- 6

Herrera came on pretty late but did a decent job. It was he who played the ball to Martial as he won the penalty.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson-6

It was a great night for the 18 year old as he made his debut for Manchester United. He came on for Marcos Rojo and did a decent job at left-back.
