It has now been revealed that Manchester United striker Anthony Martial turned down a move to join Premier League champions Chelsea, prior to completing his move to Old Trafford this summer for a fee of £36m on deadline day. The Red Devils’ star turned down a move to Stamford Bridge at the end of the transfer window.
The French teenager joined the Premier League giants eventually and has enjoyed a fine start to his debut season in England, scoring four goals in his first six games.
Questions were asked when United spent such a huge amount on the former Monaco man, yet Louis van Gaal’s side were not the only top English club interested in him, as revealed by the club’s vice-president Vadim Vasilyev this week.
He said, “There was another club that offered even more than United.”
“I will not say how much, but the fixed price, without variables, it was even better. And also they offered us to have him for a further year in Monaco.”
“But the boy wanted to go to Manchester, it was his dream. And we let him go with the bonus of €30m. Had it not been for so much money, he’d have stayed.
