Manchester United Linked With A Move For Ajax Defender: Why He Would Be Perfect In Midfield

Following their 5-1 demolition of reigning World Cup champions Spain, there are certainly a few members of the Netherlands squad van Gaal will want at Old Trafford next year.

The Daily Mirror reports that Louis van Gaal will look to bring versatile Ajax defender Daley Blind with him to Manchester United, after the World Cup in Brazil.

Blind was a key figure playing in the left-wingback position, and caused Spain all sorts of problems, with his vision and quick passing on the counter which set up two Netherlands goals. (Squawka)

If he was to join Manchester United, with Patrice Evra signing a new one year deal, Blind would most likely operate in a midfield role, which he is more than capable of playing.

Frank de Boer often changes Blind’s position, he would alternate between left-back, holding midfielder and even fill in at centre-back or sweeper.

Ajax over the years have always looked to promote youth from their famous academy, and those who become top players are usually sold for high fees.

The latest example being playmaker Christian Eriksen, was the heartbeat of the team in the number 10 role, but when Tottenham offered £11 million, Ajax parted company with their prized asset.

I think Blind will be a similar situation, if Manchester United offer a reasonable figure, around £10 million, Ajax with most likely take the money.

The move will likely come down to whether Louis van Gaal can convince the player to join him, as Ajax are not in a desperate need to sell.

Here is Blind’s assist for Robin van Persie’s fantastic header against Spain.
