Interview: Chris Kamara Talks Louis van Gaal, Expectations And Why Former Boss Misused Young Winger

With the best part of 15 years in the media and a successful playing career behind him, Chris Kamara has established himself as one of the most popular faces in football. We had a chat with the man himself about Louis van Gaal, Adnan Januzaj and what United fans can expect next season.

With Louis van Gaal coming into Manchester United, there has been talk about him giving Robin van Persie the captaincy and building his attack around him, rather than Wayne Rooney. If you were in charge, which of the two would you make the key man?

“Manchester United have never been about one striker. Even when Eric Cantona came in and was the catalyst of the side, when Sir Alex Ferguson bent over backwards for him, it was always about more than just one player.

“I’m not sure van Gaal will go out on a limb for Robin van Persie. The main focus is the team and not an individual.”

Adnan Januzaz was pinpointed as the highlight of last season for many Manchester United fans. What have you made of him so far?

“I’ve been impressed. David Moyes used him as the catalyst early in the season when things weren’t going his way and will be able to look back and say I gave him his chance. At Everton he did it with Wayne Rooney – he pulled him in and out of the side and the balance was perfect.

“I think he used Januzaj too much last season and I think van Gaal will get the credit because Januzaj will be a stronger player next time round. He’s a little bit better and a bit more mature.”

What can Manchester United fans expect next season?

“Improvement, that’s for sure. They got off to a shocker last season and never looked comfortable at home which has never been the case for Manchester United. They have always dominated at home but last season no one was scared to go to Old Trafford and they capitalised of the lack of confidence.

“They didn’t become bad players over night – they just lost confidence in themselves, they lost belief in the manager  and it became a situation that they had never been in before. They weren’t getting the same protection as they were under Ferguson because Moyes didn’t know how to, with it being his first time managing a club the stature of United. Van Gaal is used to managing big sides.

“They won’t finish in the same position as last season, that’s for sure.”
