The Mirror say that Manchester United are watching former Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic as they look to strengthen the middle of their squad, so I thought that I would take a moment to run through their current options and have a look where the Serbia international would fit in.
Matic was a part of the deal that took David Luiz to Stamford Bridge in 2011 after making no impact in west London, but he has thrived in the Portuguese top tier since arriving. Last season he was awarded with the Player of the Season for the whole division and has established himself as one of the most efficient defensive midfielders in Europe.
Michael Carrick currently plays as the shield in the United midfield but with Matic coming in it could release the England international into a more creative role. Carrick’s range of passing is quite incredible but he’s often restricted in his ambition.
Matic is a stronger player than both Tom Cleverley and Anderson, while he’s also more energetic than Carrick.
He would add muscle, fight and a real bite to the United midfield and for me he would be the ideal man to come in and solidify.
United fans, what would you think of Matic in your side?
As somebody who watched a few games to see how Matic plays and what kind of roles he fullfills, I must say that your article gives me an impression that you saw only a picture of him?! He has far more refined than simply a “big size defender”. He is fantastic in distributing the ball and making his team much more productive from their base level. That is rather his central role – not merely the defense.
