The Pros And Cons Of Signing Robin Van Persie

It’s been confirmed.

Sir Alex said this on MUTV: “Arsenal have given it out we’ve made a bid for Robin van Persie. We have tried to keep it as close to a moment that we could conclude a deal.”

So, do we need him?

If we sell Dimitar Berbatov and loan Federico Macheda out I think we do need another striker, on the other hand signing van Persie would limit other players chances  like Javier Hernandez, Danny Welbeck, Shini Kagawa and Ashley Young.

We all know RVP is a quality player, but his injury record is shocking. And paying quoted £20-25 million for him would be insane.

Cons:

– No re-sell value

– Would require massive wage packet

– Limits young players’ chances

– Extremely injury prone

– Had his first good season for Arsenal last season

Pros:

– Proven goalscorer in the Premier League

– Experienced player

– Great signing if we could get him for £15 million

– Could tear defenses apart with Wayne Rooney

– Can lead the line alone or play in the hole

My verdict: We should sign him if we get him for under £20million.  I wouldn’t hold my breath though, I think he’ll sign for Manchester City.

  1. Spot on post. As an Arsenal fan i can tell you he has one great season for us. Most of the previous two were wiped out by injury. I think most Arsenal fans will jump at the 25 million that city will be stupid enough to pay (see Adebayor) as long as it is re-invested in the team. Less than 20 milion and we won't sell. Problem for United is you could pay a lot of money and see him crocked playing for Holland and out for a long time. I'm surprised Ferguson is interested to be honest.

  2. Wasn't most of this said about Berbatov? Yet I don't think Van Persie will be as calm about not playing as the Bulgarian has been.

Maybe you should look at it this way: signing him weakens Arsenal and keeps City from getting stronger at the front, even if it does nothing for United.
