Here’s What We Learnt This Weekend #14

So after the latest week of the Premier League season, here’s what we learnt this weekend:

Firstly we’ve learnt that only at Ewood Park can a striker score four goals, go off and celebrate with his manager and get booed whilst doing so in the process. This could only happen at Blackburn Rovers who to their manager Steve Kean’s credit won a six-goal thriller over Swansea City.

Yakubu to his credit has surprised the majority of fans and pundits with his form, proving that he’s still up to the physical demands of top-flight football. He took his goals well at the weekend and was certainly a top-signing by the under-fire Kean. Is he sadly on his way to scoring 20 goals in a relegated team? At this rate you’d have to say yes.

We’ve learnt that David Luiz must have a guardian angel after somehow avoiding being sent off for hauling down Newcastle United’s Demba Ba through on goal inside the fourth minute of Chelsea’s win at St James’ Park. It was a definite foul which should have been punished with a red card.

For some unknown reason referee Mike Dean failed to use common sense and send the eccentric Brazilian off. It was the turning point of the game and unsurprisingly after that the inevitable happened with Chelsea much to the delight of their manager Andre-Villas Boas going on to win the game and pick up a much-needed three points.

We’ve learnt this week that Bolton’s woes are only going to continue now that their leader Gary Cahill has copped himself a one-match ban after being controversially sent off against Spurs at the weekend. It was a blow which Owen Coyle hardly needs right now.

Whilst Spurs deservedly beat the Trotters, there’s no doubt that the dismissal of Cahill made life easier for Harry Redknapp’s men who ran riot and but for the outstanding form of Jussi Jaaskelainen could have quite won the game 6/7-0. You have to say currently Bolton do look to be a side who unless things improve pretty soon are doomed for relegation

We’ve learnt that Martin O’Neill is probably the best person to take over the sinking ship that’s Sunderland. The Northern Irishman knows how to get the best out of players and after seeing his team lose to Wolves will very quickly take charge leading the Black Cats into mid-table.

His first game in charge next week at home to Blackburn looks to be a real ‘six pointer.’ Kean’s side are there for the taking and after missed chances (including a Sebastian Larsson penalty) cost them victory at Wolves now Sunderland must start well under O’Neill and bring the confidence back to the Stadium of Light which hasn’t been there this season.

Lastly we’ve learnt that Phil Jones continues to be an excellent midfielder for Manchester United, that only the enigma that’s Mario Balotelli would score a goal with his shoulder, that Shane Long continues to look a good signing for Reading and that Robin van Persie can score ordinary goals!
