Man United legend expresses concern about lack of firepower from 20-year-old

Marcus Rashford

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Marcus Rashford isn’t the threat he used to be, and is trying to impress too many people.

The defender was speaking ahead of the Champions League and as quoted by Express, Ferdinand said that the youngster isn’t terrorizing defences like before.

“Now, he doesn’t do it as much. I think he is coming on and trying to please everyone. He might be confused on what the manager wants. It doesn’t seem that there is same spark. Where’s that fearlessness that there was before?”

The United legend added that some of these qualities have to be reintroduced into the United striker. He goes on to claim that Rashford doesn’t seem as assertive as he used to be.

The 20-year-old picked up a red card in the Premier League clash against Burnley and was suspended for the trip to Watford. The former England defender further stated that the youngster was fearless before, which isn’t the case now.

Ferdinand also had a bit of a pop at Jose Mourinho for not backing Rashford.

“There was a single-mindedness, a young kid, with no fear, playing football for Manchester United, the team he supported as a boy.

“I want to see that back again. But the manager is paid to make the decisions and he has gone and bought Lukaku, he has gone and bought Sanchez. What message is that sending to this young player? You aren’t my main guy!”

The 20-year-old only has one start to his name this season, meaning he has to take chances and perform well. He won’t replace Romelu Lukaku at the tip of the attack but could do a decent job for us out wide.
