Manchester United would have to pay a world-record fee as Leicester City want close to £80m for England centre-back Harry Maguire, according to the Daily Star.

United have been linked with a move for the 25-year-old who starred in the World Cup for the Three Lions and Ed Woodward has approached the Foxes about a move for the Englishman.

The report claims that Jose Mourinho wants to make Maguire his fourth signing of the summer and wants to complete the deal before the deadline. However, Leicester haven’t responded all that enthusiastically to the deal for Maguire.

Leicester hope that Maguire will sign a new contract and remain at the club. The former Premier League champions also have no interest in selling their star defender unless Maguire explicitly tells them he wants to leave the King Power Stadium.

Maguire was signed by the Foxes last summer for a fee of £17m and Leicester would make a tidy profit should they sell him and they are looking for an incredible £80m. The Foxes have already lost one of their stars in Riyad Mahrez, who joined Manchester City for a fee of £60m.

Even if are willing to splash the cash, the report claims that Leicester are not under any financial issues and do not need to sell Maguire.

The report adds that Woodward is concerned with Mourinho getting a number of defenders in the side as we already have Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and Phil Jones. Woodward wants Mourinho to sell one of these players before making a move for the World Cup star.

Maguire might be a quality defender but it is tough to suggest that he could be worth £80m but given how the transfer window has inflated, we might have to pay close to that amount to get our hands on one of the rising stars of English football.
