Manchester United table formal bid to sign €45m Italian defender, Jose looks to strengthen his defence

According to Italian news outlet Calciomercato, Manchester United have submitted a €45million bid to sign AC Milan star defender Alessio Romagnoli.

Jose Mourinho is looking to strengthen his defence this summer as he looks to build a squad capable of competing with Manchester City for the title, having finished 19 points adrift of their cross-town rivals last season. The Red Devils have already signed right-back Diogo Dalot and midfielder Fred but Mourinho is on the hunt for further reinforcements.

Manchester United struggled defensively last season despite the acquisition of Victor Lindelof from SL Benfica. Lindelof failed to adapt to the Premier League and was in and out of the team, while Phil Jones and Chris Smalling inspired very little confidence in the defence.

So defensive reinforcements are indeed required ahead of the new season and Mourinho has targeted Milan’s Romagnoli, who has just signed a contract extension until 2022 at San Siro and as per Calciomercato, United’s offer of €45million plus €5million bonuses has been rejected by the Milan.

However, should United table an improved offer for the defender, the Serie A giants would seriously consider the proposal.

Romagnoli came through the youth system at Roma before joining AC Milan in August 2015. He’s developed into one of the best ball-playing central defenders in Italy. He has also established himself in the Italian national team, having earned seven caps so far.

United should simply raise the offer for Romagnoli, who was excellent at the heart of the Milan defence last season. If our club manages to sign the Italian this summer, it would be a massive signing.
