Jose Mourinho has given green light to Manchester United for the signing of Germany and Bayern Munich central defender Jerome Boateng, according to Spanish reports.

Don Balon (h/t The Express) claims that the German defender would be the third signing of the summer by United after completing deals for Fred and Diogo Dalot.

The former Manchester City defender has won six Bundesliga titles with Bayern but also won the FA Cup with our rivals Manchester City in 2011.

Boateng is currently with the Germany squad at the World Cup in Russia and Munich are willing to let the 29-year-old leave for the right deal. There is some competition for the former City player as Real Madrid are also interested in his services. This could drive the defender’s price up.

While we have done a bit of business in the summer, there is no doubt that we need to add more quality to the side in order to make a real challenge for the Premier League title next season.

Eric Bailly should be a sure starter at the back but we need to add more quality and experience to the defence and this is where Boateng could fit in. However, the German did struggle when he was bought by Man City and even if he is more experienced now, the Premier League is a tougher league than the Bundesliga.

Making a move for the German would only make sense if we don’t pay over the top. Boateng is 29 and there would be younger and better options available on the market should we choose to continue the search.
