Manchester United 2-1 Arsenal: Fellaini’s ‘Fergie-time’ Header Hands Arsene Wenger Yet Another Defeat At Old Trafford

Manchester United secured Champions League football with a 2-1 win over Arsenal at Old Trafford. The match will be remembered as being Arsene Wenger’s last match at Old Trafford as the manager of Arsenal but he could not get 3 points on the day.

Arsenal did field an experimental side as their attention was towards the second leg of the semi-final in the Europa League against Atletico Madrid and it was Paul Pogba who got the first goal of the game.

The Gunners did come back into the game with a goal from former United player Henrikh Mkhitaryan but the winner was scored by Marouane Fellaini of all people.

The Belgian scored in the 91st minute as he headed in a cross from Ashley Young. There were memories of ‘Fergie-time’ after the win and here’s how the United players fared against the Gunners.

Manchester United Player Ratings

David de Gea – 6.5/10

The Spaniard couldn’t do much to keep out Mkhitaryan’s goal but did everything else pretty well. A routine day for our keeper.

Antonio Valencia – 6/10

Valencia was his normal self down the right. He did pump balls into the Arsenal box but to no avail.

Chris Smalling – 6/10

Smalling was partly at fault for the goal we conceded but he did have a late tackle to ensure we did not concede another goal in the second half.

Victor Lindelof – 6.5/10

Another player who was at fault for the Mkhitaryan goal but the Swede was much better in defence than some of his earlier performances for us.

Ashley Young – 7/10

Young did put in a few great crosses into the defence and one such cross led to the winning goal for us.

Ander Herrera – 6/10

The Spaniard wasn’t as great as he has been in some of our other matches in recent weeks. Herrera also misjudged a pass that led to our goal.

Nemanja Matic – 6/10

The Serbian didn’t have a great game either as he didn’t dominate the midfield as many would have expected him to.

Paul Pogba – 7/10

The Frenchman started our move for the opening goal and finished it really well. He could and should have done more in the game but we did get the three points.

Jesse Lingard – 5/10

A really poor performance from Lingard in the game as he gave the ball away to the opposition on multiple occasions.

Romelu Lukaku – 5/10

Lukaku too seemed to be out of touch and had to be substituted early in the second half after picking up an injury.

Alexis Sanchez – 6/10

Sanchez did have a header come off the post which led to us scoring the opening goal. However, there was a lot more expected from the former Gunner against his old side.

Substitutes

Marcus Rashford – 5/10

Rashford didn’t really do anything of note in the game.

Anthony Martial – 7/10

Martial did pretty well after coming on, as his direct running did cause the Gunners a lot of problems. The Frenchman put in a great cross, which almost led to a late goal for us.

Marouane Fellaini – 7/10

The Belgian made a real impact after coming on as he first headed a cross from Martial on to the post and then scored in the final minutes of the game.
