Man United to activate £3m release clause of former Red Devil and rival Tottenham for the signing

According to the Telegraph, Manchester United could rival Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal for the signing of West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans in summer.

The Telegraph reports that a number of Premier League clubs are monitoring the situation of Evans at the Hawthorns with West Brom highly likely to get relegated this season. The Telegraph adds that Arsenal had a bid rejected in the winter transfer window, while runaway league leaders Manchester City were interested in signing him before they snapped up Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao in January.

Evans has a £3million release clause in his deal and that can be activated if West Brom suffer relegation and the Telegraph claims that Manchester United are among the several top-flight English clubs interested in launching a move.

Evans is a famous figure amongst the United fans, having started his career at Old Trafford. He broke into the first-team in 2006 and went on to play close to 200 games for United. The 30-year-old won three Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy in his nine-year spell with the Red Devils before he was sold to West Brom in 2015 by then United manager Louis Van Gaal.

As reported by the Metro, Jose Mourinho is set to run a summer overhaul and is ready to sell a number of players following the Champions League debacle against Sevilla earlier this month. But the Telegraph says United could face fierce competition in the race to sign Evans, with Tottenham also said to be interested in the Northern Ireland centre-back if Toby Alderweireld is sold in summer.
