Scott McTominay reveals the one man responsible for his incredible rise at Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has revealed Jose Mourinho to be the man responsible for his meteoric rise at the club.

The 21-year-old made his United debut last year at the Emirates, coming on as a substitute for Juan Mata. The Red Devils suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Arsenal but little did McTominay know that his six-minute cameo at the Emirates was the first step towards a big road at Old Trafford.

After making a substitute appearance against Arsenal, Mourinho handed McTominay his first United start on the last day of the season against Crystal Palace. United won 2-0 and the 21-year-old impressed, highlighting Mourinho’s decision to start him was indeed the right one.

This season, the midfielder has been thrown to face the big shots in the EFL Cup, Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup. The best part is that McTominay has excelled in every game he has played so far and has become a regular starter in the league since the start of 2018.

McTominay’s hard work and desire has not gone unnoticed as the midfielder received his first call-up to Alex McLeish’s Scotland squad.

When asked about his incredible rise at United in such a short period of time, McTominay told Inside United: “Obviously, there are numerous different factors that have contributed in terms of my development but the main one is Jose Mourinho.

“He’s had the faith to put me in for important matches and trusted me in really big games. So all credit goes to him.

“If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t have had chances to play and show people I’m hopefully capable of being a Manchester United player in the future.

“There’s nothing better for me than being selected in the big games. The Champions League game at Sevilla, the Champions League game before that, Liverpool, Chelsea and even the other cup games as well.

“It’s really good for me to be trusted by the manager. I hope to repay him as he’s done really well to push me forward.”

McTominay has done a fantastic job this season, especially after the start of 2018 and lets hope he continues his development in the same manner.
