Manchester United are edging closer to securing a January move for Real Madrid’s midfield maestro Toni Kroos, according to the Mirror. Now, this news is something that has been brewing since December and with the January window up and running, Jose Mourinho might just raid his former club to sign Kroos. It is understood that the reigning European champions are keen on bringing in some new recruits after their lacklustre performances this season so far.

They have struggled in the La Liga and they are struggling in the Champions League as well. While it is certainly not easy to defend both these titles, Zinedine Zidane’s men have faltered far too many times already. This has sent shock waves across the club’s extended fan base and if they are to add new players, they might be keen on offloading some current players and Kroos is believed to be on that list.

Although he was signed for a price tag of £20m from Bayern Munich, there is no doubt that Los Blancos will charge a steep amount for him. He is easily one of the best midfielders in the game right now but it is understandable as to why Real are willing to part ways with him. They have a surplus of midfield options with the likes of Casemiro, Luka Modric, Isco, Mateo Kovacic, Marco Asensio and Dani Ceballos all vying for starting spots.

At United, however, the situation is rather bleak. Veteran Michael Carrick is expected to retire at the end of the season and he continues to be sidelined with an injury. Paul Pogba has displayed strength in the middle but he needs more support.

Marouane Fellaini has been in-and-out of injuries as well and has been largely inconsistent, whereas Ander Herrera has just failed to live up to the mark. Nemanja Matic has held the fort from a deep-lying role but it is clear that Mourinho is dire need of options going forward.

With the rest of the season ahead, the manager will need to address this situation since injuries have depleted his options. However, it will be interesting to see if we are able to splash out the kind of money that would be needed for a signing like Kroos.
