Manchester United squandered a perfect opportunity to go 5 points ahead of the third-placed Chelsea after conceding a last minute goal against Claude Puel’s Leicester City, who were coming on the back of a 3-0 defeat against Crystal Palace.
As always, Mourinho criticised his players for missing “joke chances” and with the draw, the deficit between us and Manchester City has stretched to 13 points, which is the biggest points deficit between first and second place at Christmas in English top-flight history.
Ironically, the team which is known for scoring injury-time winners conceded two injury injury-time goals in a week, with another one being from Bristol City in the EFL Cup tie.
The deadlock was broken by the home team in as early as the 27th minute after Jamie Vardy finished the ball in what can be described as a perfect counter.
United responded strongly and Juan Mata went on to score two. United were leading by a goal and a red card for Daniel Amartey meant United had a perfect opportunity to seal the game and they indeed came close through Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard. However, they were found guilty of missing those golden opportunities. Paul Pogba tested Schmeichel as well, but the stopper made sure he saved them all.
United were finally punished in the 4th minute of the injury time after their defence failed to deal with Marc Albrighton’s deep cross and Harry McGuire stunned the travelling crowd by finishing the ball from close range.
“We were punished by our mistakes,” Mourinho told Sky Sports. “Childish loss of possession, so easy. Childish in their box and childish in our box.
“Half an hour after our second it is a game to finish four, five, six-one. We didn’t win because we missed incredible chances, joke chances.”
Safe to say the title race is all but over now.
Meanwhile, the fans showed their frustration on Twitter and here’s how they reacted:

Tbh if Martial and Lingard had taken their chances, we would’ve won

Let’s be fair. We had 10 men when Rashford came on. Wasteful. No effort. Awful performance from him, just the same against Bristol city.

Get Rashford out of my club
— Saranda (@sarandasahitis) December 23, 2017
Because he’s 20 he shouldn’t act like he is 27 years and like he’s the best player in the world. HE NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND HE HAS TO PLAY WITH THE TEAM!
— Saranda (@sarandasahitis) December 23, 2017
It’s time for a lot of changes to our club. These players are just not good enough! So many blown chances! How many times do we have to give up a winning position before these players learn how to put teams away and close out games?!

Mourinho is running out of favour…. his tactics have really gone to hell

Imagine a £2m+ a week wage bill for these embarrassments 😡 not fit for the shirt. Mourinho has lost his ‘Special’ gimmick
— Big G 🇬🇧 (@RFCGW) December 23, 2017
Please, leave Mourinho out of this. If Martial, Lingard and Rashford had scored it would have been a different story.
— A.B.S (@abbey_abbeyABS) December 23, 2017
Mourinho has as much to do with our inconsistency as anyone. I’m not one to blame him too much but he’s not doing himself any favours. Big January window I think
— Big G 🇬🇧 (@RFCGW) December 23, 2017
Rashford already thinks he’s made it, he dosent deserve a united shirt at the minute, needs dropped
— Tylasteele (@tylasteeleSS) December 23, 2017
