‘Give him the No. 7 jersey’, ‘Tears of joy’ – Manchester United Fans Excited As Midfielder Signs New Deal With The Club

Manchester United starlet Angel Gomes has signed his first professional contract with the club. The 17-year-old is a product of the club’s Academy system and has represented Manchester United at every age level. Gomes made his senior debut for United in the final game of last season against Crystal Palace but would have been able to leave for a nominal fee at the end of this campaign.

The midfielder became the youngest player to play for United since Duncan Edwards in 1953 when he replaced Wayne Rooney as a substitute against Crystal Palace in May.

Gomes said it feels “amazing” to have signed his first professional contract with Manchester United and hopes it will lead to more first-team opportunities in the future.

“It’s amazing and something I’ve been working for my whole life and all the time I’ve been at the club since the age of six. To finally get the deal signed is great for me and my family,” the 17-year-old told manutd.com.

The teenage sensation was also part of England Under 17s squad that clinched the World Cup title in India. To be honest, Gomes has achieved something that many United academy graduates only get to dream about. In the 2016/17 season, he made 19 starts and two substitute appearances for United’s under-18s. In those games, he scored 12 goals – which is a telling stat given he is not an out-and-out striker. To add to his meteoric rise as a player, the midfielder also has a first-team appearance.

Gomes received the award for Academy Player of the Year at the club’s end-of-season awards, a well-deserved reward for an impressive campaign.

So with the teenage prodigy signing his first-ever United contract, let’s take a look at how our fans reacted to this news on Twitter.
