Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian has confessed that he will return to Italy one day and has further admitted that he would like to play more first-team football.

Darmian moved to Old Trafford back in 2015 and despite the fact that he can play on either wing, he has failed to gain a regular spot. Even under Louis van Gaal (who actually brought him to the club), he lost his place to Antonio Valencia on the right and Ashley Young on the left; which was all down to his inconsistency. Darmian showed plenty of promise during his time with Torino, but unfortunately failed to adapt himself to the rigours of the Premier League.

Mourinho decided to name Darmian in his team sheet against Stoke City, but the Italian was utterly exposed by the brilliance of Shaqiri. And now with the World Cup year in progress, the full-back wants to play as much football as possible to book his name in Italy’s national team.

Speaking about his future during a press conference ahead of Italy’s World Cup qualifier against Macedonia, Darmian confessed that coming to United was his choice and he certainly doesn’t regret it.

“I made a choice (to come to Manchester United) and I don’t regret it,” Darmian was quoted by Metro Sports.

“Of course it’s normal that any player wants to play as much as possible. I work hard every week and I’ll keep doing it. I don’t always watch Italian football and I don’t know what will happen in future, maybe there will be a chance to come back one day.”

He further added words for Jose Mourinho and quoted that things are going perfectly well at Manchester United and hoped that he can contribute more to it.

“Mourinho has been coaching me for two years and he’s tried to bring his ideas to the team,’ the Italian said.

“He’s very hungry, he has a huge desire to win trophies and he transmits that hunger and desire to the team. Things are going very well and we hope to continue like this.”

It was widely tipped that Darmian would leave Manchester United this summer and back in July, Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio even quoted,

“For Darmian, it seems that Manchester United is not willing to let go,”

But nothing eventually happened and the Italian stayed put. It now remains to be seen what lies in store for the full-back next.
