Manchester United Lining Up An Unexpected Move For Arsenal Contract Rebel

Mesut Ozil would be a great buy for Manchester United.

Manchester United are reportedly mulling over a move for Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil, according to The Independent. The Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho is confident of reviving his previous working relationship with the mercurial German and land him on a Bosman transfer.

Ozil is a contract rebel at Arsenal and will be out of contract at the end of this season. The Gunners tried to tie him down but along with Alexis Sanchez, Ozil  has kept Arsene Wenger on the tenterhooks.

Now that it is a huge possibility that he might move away on a free transfer next summer, the only question would be as to where he would be heading to. There are rumours that Borussia Dortmund are eager to lure him back to Germany while Inter Milan are also interested in his services.

The fact that Ozil worked with Mourinho is obviously a reason why the German playmaker has been linked with Man Utd. The 28-year-old arrived at Real Madrid in the summer of 2010 along with Jose Mourinho and left together three years later, to London, with Mourinho joining Chelsea and Ozil joining Arsenal.

The duo has remained in good terms ever since and Mourinho even wrote the foreword for the player’s autobiography.

Does that make him a ‘Mourinho player’? For all his virtues, Ozil consistently cops criticism about his work rate. He rarely shows interest in tracking back after losing the ball – definitely not what Mourinho wants in his player.

Another worry is that Ozil goes missing in big games. I don’t see how he can transform himself from now to next summer to become a completely different player.

Add to that the fact that United are well stocked in the playmaker position. Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Juan Mata, Ander Herrera – these are just some names who fit the profile. The competition is so huge that some of them end up playing on the wings, just to get into the playing XI.

Reports may say that Ozil’s relationship with Mourinho will pull him towards Old Trafford next season but I don’t see that happening. His weaknesses far outweigh the abilities that he carries and will always be a liability.

Do you feel Ozil can be a good addition to the side or should we avoid him?
