Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has warned that the Red Devils should be ready to face the backlash for their brilliant start to the Premier League season. According to Manchester Evening News, Matic feels that the road ahead for Jose Mourinho’s side is going to be difficult and that the side should be braced for tougher fixtures.

The Serbian midfielder who has been one of the success stories of the summer joined Manchester United after a prolonged battle with Chelsea. The fact that the Blues did part with one of the most hard-working midfielders in the entire Premier League is a surprise to many football analysts.

Matic has helped his side start in a positive fashion by notching up 19 points from the first 7 matches, with a 2-2 draw away to Stoke City being the lone loss of points. The Red Devils sit atop the Premier League standings on same points as neighbours Manchester City, with the Citizens ahead on goal difference.

Matic’s presence in the middle of the park seems to have liberated star playmaker Paul Pogba who started the season on a very positive note. With the Frenchman injured and looking set to be out for a considerable period, Matic’s importance has only increased.

The Serbian who has won the Premier League twice with Chelsea in 2015 and 2017, opined that the opposition will now take extra detail into how the Red Devils are playing.

“We cannot be relaxed for the future because we have to win more, focus because the teams now know how we play, the teams knows our formation, our players and, of course, in the future those will want to show they can play against Manchester United,” said the midfielder.

United have been scoring consistently this season, having scored 21 goals in the Premier League, 7 in the Champions League and 4 in the Carabao Cup so far this season.

Matic says that the squad depth at Old Trafford is second to none and that Mourinho’s squad has the strength to mount a title run and challenge for top honours.

The midfielder was quick to dismiss any notions of being the favourites in the title race as he believes that there are more than five teams that can win the Premier League this year.

“It’s too early to say someone is favourite to win the league, but for sure there is five or six teams who are going to compete this year.”

Matic’s arrival this summer has improved the squad remarkably well as he has settled into life at Old Trafford with ease. Let us all hope that he can celebrate his debut season with a title win!
