Manchester United are reportedly ready to open talks with their star goalkeeper David de Gea regarding a new deal. The Spanish ‘keeper has a contract that runs until 2019 and the Red Devils are confident that De Gea will agree to a new contract despite the long-standing interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid, according to reports from The Independent.
The 26-year-old has been touted as a long-term target for the Los Blancos, which means they could be eyeing a deal next summer. As De Gea’s current deal ends in 2019, United run the risk of letting the player enter the final year of his contract, with strong interest from the Spanish capital.
The Red Devils have been insistent that they will not buckle under pressure from Real, and are looking to extend De Gea’s stay at Old Trafford.
Although it has been indicated in the past by the Spanish number one that his dream would be to return to Spain, United feel that he is now feeling even more comfortable in Manchester.
After an initial period of discomfort with Jose Mourinho – when, the Portuguese tactician favored Sergio Romero – De Gea has grown into being the number one choice at the club. In fact, it is being indicated that the Portuguese tactician wants to tie down De Gea, considered to be one of the best in the world, to a new contract by the start of the new year.
Real Madrid have made several attempts to buy the player and came perilously close to signing him a couple of years back. It was only due to red tape paperwork that the deal fell through.
In the past couple of years, Kaylor Navas has re-established himself as the number one at Santiago Bernabeu, endearing himself to the club faithful. There are also reports in the local media that Real have moved away from De Gea and are looking at other alternatives.
Overall, United feel confident that they can tie De Gea to a longer deal and as a fan, I feel that’s one of the most important decisions to make. Because David de Gea is one of the best the world.
